Ep 58 Finding God's Still Small Voice

William Carroll Episode 58

Have you ever sought God in the spectacular, only to miss His voice in the silence?

Elijah's journey from dramatic victory to desperate flight reveals a universal truth about our spiritual walk. After witnessing fire from heaven consume not just his sacrifice but the altar itself, this mighty prophet runs for his life at the mere threat of Queen Jezebel. It's a startling reminder of how quickly our faith can falter despite experiencing God's power firsthand.

The heart of Elijah's story unfolds at Mount Horeb, where God asks the penetrating question we all need to answer: "What are you doing here?" Rather than appearing in the dramatic wind, earthquake, or fire, God speaks through a still small voice—teaching us that divine guidance often comes not through spectacular signs but gentle whispers that require attentive listening. This revelation transforms how we understand spiritual communication in our noisy, distraction-filled world.

William Carroll draws a crucial distinction between the Holy Spirit's gentle conviction and the enemy's harsh condemnation. When we stumble, the Spirit leads us back to restoration while the accuser tries to isolate us in shame. Understanding this difference liberates us to walk confidently in grace, knowing our sins are removed "as far as the east is from the west"—completely separated from our identity through Christ's finished work. This isn't earned through our efforts but received through faith, as Ephesians 2 reminds us.

If you're feeling lost in darkness today or struggling to hear God's voice, know that He's reaching for you exactly where you are. Don't wait another moment to call out to Him. Begin reading in the Gospel of John and discover the transforming power of walking daily with the Holy Spirit. Your new life—free from condemnation and full of purpose—starts with recognizing His still small voice.

Speaker 1:

Well, good evening and welcome to Faith Walk with William Carroll. I'm your host. I'm going to continue on. I was on a roll and I'm going to continue on with this.

Speaker 1:

How Elijah learned to hear the small voice of God. We know that in the last episode he had run from God. He was on a brook and the brook dried up. The the ravens had been feeding him and then an angel had come. And the angel had came and gave him to eat and drink and he went to sleep and he woke him up anyway. Um, he went after the angels fed him.

Speaker 1:

He went in that in a journey of 40 days and 40 nights as far as herob, the mountain of God, all right. So when he got there, he went into a cave. This is 1 Kings 19 and 9. He went into a cave and he spent the night in the place and, behold, the word of the Lord came unto him and he said what are you doing here, elijah? You remember I said that Elijah had been running from God. He ran from God after God created a miracle with the fire that assumed the sacrifice and ate up the rocks and the stones and even the dirt of the ground and the water, and Jezebel, the evil queen, said I'm going to have your head tonight, after he had just killed 850 prophets. And so he ran in fear.

Speaker 1:

So what happened was he's in this mountain, he goes up into the mountain of God, and he went into a cave and he spent the night and behold, the word of the Lord came to him and said what are you doing here, elijah? And so he said I've been very zealous for the Lord, god of hosts for the children of Israel, and the children of Israel have forsaken your covenant, torn down your altars, killed your prophets with the sword and I alone am left. I'm the only one. And they seek to take my life. Now listen, the only one that was looking to take his life was the queen that was married to Ahab, which was Jezebel.

Speaker 1:

Right, and he said the Lord told him, said go out and stand on the mountain before the Lord. And behold, the Lord passed by and a great, strong wind tore into the mountains and broke the rocks in pieces before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind. And after the wind, an earthquake, but the Lord was not in an earthquake. And after the earthquake, a fire, but the Lord was not in a fire. After the fire, a still small voice.

Speaker 1:

And it was when Elijah heard that that he wrapped his face in his mantle and he went out and stood in the entrance of the cave and suddenly a voice came to him and said what are you doing here, elijah? And he said I have been a zealous. He told him again I'd been zealous, and because the children of Israel have forsaken your government and they killed your prophets and they're looking to seek my life. And the Lord said to him go and return on your way to the wilderness of Damascus and when you arrive, anoint Hazel as king over Syria, and that you'll anoint Jehu, the son of Nimshi, as king over Israel, and Elishas, the son of Shaphat, you shall anoint as prophet in your place. Okay, so he got his marching orders. He said listen, you're going to anoint another man in your place, you're going to anoint a king, jehu, who would take the place of Ahab, and Jehu would actually throw the queen out of a window.

Speaker 1:

Anyway, I'm getting ahead of myself. I don't want to do that, but I want to tell you something. So what we're seeing here is when God was coming up front of the cave and there was a big song wind and it split the mountains and it split the things in the cave and then there was a fire and there was an earthquake that winded. Listen, if you're looking for God in the wind, in the fire, in the earthquakes, then I just want to tell you that's not where he's at. He's not in the wind, the fire, the earthquakes. God is in a still small voice. You can learn to know the voice and the leading of God through the promise of the Father, which was the Holy Spirit which he poured out at Pentecost for the church.

Speaker 1:

You need to learn who the Holy Spirit is. He is the spirit of conviction. He's there to convict you when you sin, not condemn you. The devil condemns you. The devil is called the accuser of the brethren. That means he will accuse you every time you sin, every time you want to do something for God. He'll bring up past sins and try to bring them up to you and say look, you remember you can't do this because God look, you remember when you did this.

Speaker 1:

Well, listen, the word of God says that once God has forgiven us of our sins, he puts them as far as the east is from the west in the sea of forgetfulness, never to remember them anymore. As far as the east is to the west. Do you know how far that is? The east and the west never touch.

Speaker 1:

Now there's a song out by Casting Crowns and it says that God has put our sins as far as the east is to the west, and it's from one nail scarred hand to the other. And and to me that is just man. I was the first time I heard that. I got it, that Christ paid the price for our sins. He paid the price for our sins. We couldn't do it. There's, we can't. There's no way we can be good enough. He paid the price for our sins. We couldn't do it. There's no way we can be good enough to pay the price for our sins. There's no way we can do anything to receive or to work off our sins.

Speaker 1:

You know it's by faith, through grace, are we saved, not a works, lest any man should boast. Ephesians, chapter 2. Go read it. We are saved by faith, through grace, not of works, lest any man should boast. You know, and I tell you, what Elijah had to find out that. You know he walked with God, but he didn't have the spirit like it was given to us today. See, he moved as the spirit came upon him. When the Holy Spirit came upon him, then he would move and he would go. When the spirit wasn't upon him, then Jezebel could send a message and he was scared and he ran in fear.

Speaker 1:

But you know, the devil does the same thing to us today. He tries to send friends to us to bring us bad news. He tries to send people to you to put in your life that, to cause you to stumble and to fall and to not to believe that God is God and that God said he'll do what he says he'll do. You know, god loves you and if you don't know him or if you're not walking with him, you have strayed from the path and you're over on a different path than he is. He still loves you, he's still with you and he sends that Holy Spirit to convict you of your sins. Not condemn, but convict. You show man, you need to repent.

Speaker 1:

The Holy Spirit is a gentleman and he sent to lead us, to guide us, to teach us and to convict us of our sins that as soon as we sin, as soon as we realize that we don't live in that sin, we don't stray from the flock, we don't stray from God, but we repent of those sins and we come back into the grace and the goodness of God, because that's where he wants us. See, he's not going to let you go. That's why he sends the Holy Spirit to convict you of your sins. See, god doesn't want any man to perish, but all to come to the knowledge of him and salvation through Jesus Christ, his son.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, god loves you just like you are, even if you don't know him and you've never accepted him, and you've never accepted the work on the cross and you've just been living your life and you've made a mess out of it. You know, and you're down at the bottom on the cross and you've just been living your life and you've made a mess out of it. You know, and you're down at the bottom of the barrel and it's darkness and you don't know how you're going to get out. The devil will be just like he was to Elijah and he'll say take your life. Well, the devil's a liar. The devil is a liar.

Speaker 1:

God loves you just like you are. Call out upon him right now. Call out upon him, don't wait another second. Say, lord jesus, come into my heart, forgive me of my sins, help me out of this dark mess. I put myself in and he will do it. He will reach down, he'll lift you out of that darkness and then you can learn to walk in the power of the holy spirit. You can learn to walk in the power of a new life, because you will have a new life in Christ Jesus, because he will revive your spirit, which is dead. See, god loves you so much. He wants you to come to the knowledge of Christ. He wants you to walk with Him, to get to know Him, to love Him. Read His Word, start in the Gospel of John and then stay in the Gospels at first. God bless you.
